Discovery's organized around the exciting principle that one crew, one ship, with the right skills and mindset can tackle a wide variety of mission profiles - We do so without swapping personnel, hulls, or onboard complement. We take pride in being VNGD’s swiss army knife.

We won't shy away from a fight - our ships train for independent operations beyond the reach of help and in hostile environments  - however, our preferred tools include tactful planning, skillful negotiation, stealthy incursions / excursions, and a cunning wit. 
The fight is the last tool, not the first. 

We provide specialty support to the First Fleet wherever it is required. 

Discovery’s aims as a unit are multi-faceted: 

• To explore and survey, collecting information useful to all parts of the org.
• Execute search and rescue (S.A.R.) operations; to train and certify medical personnel.
• Gravlev-bike / tracked / wheeled ground vehicle scout operations, ensuring competence with navigation. 
  
  As the gameplay evolves, and more tools are made available..
• Engineering (capital, sub-capital, machines..)
• Surveying (base building locations, marked coordinates..)
  

Discovery has many paths for crew to specialize in.

Though the basic academy will equip one to operate in these positions at a basic level, crew are encouraged to focus in on one or more of the following disciplines through the optional Specialist pathway;

- Away Team (exploration, FPS combat, explorative)
- Engineering Crew (field repair, sub/capital maintenance, snub rearm / refuel / repair)
- Medical (combat medic, respawn management, crew health & wellness {nutrition/hydration})
- Pilot (sub / capital, carrier, snub, and ground vehicle)
- Ship Crew (sub/capital, ambulatory, station operators)

Every Discovery ship sails with the same charge: to lead Vanguard into the unknown, to chart what lies at the frontier and beyond it, and to return with the report. 

The following principles enable us to accomplish our primary directive;

1. Listed in order of importance, these are at the core of our operations.
   - Life, limb, and safety of the crew.
   - Preservation of the carrier ship and associated complement.
   - Completion of the mission.
2. The Acting Captain’s word is law; delegation of orders through crew is decided at the start of the mission, not argued over during it.
3. Maintain a constant state of readiness.
   Your personal equipment, duty station/vehicle, and understanding of where your crewmates stand are the difference between life and death, success or failure.
4. In all operations, whether recorded, scribed down, or passed on orally; obtain any and all information useful to Vanguard as a whole. Intelligence gathered is invaluable.
5. Most importantly, work as one organism, not individual parts.
   As in our unit’s motto, Discovery’s strength comes from our ability to mesh our varied skillsets into one well-oiled, very efficient machine.
